The Sanctuary Retreat is also perfectly located between the historic coastal towns of both Rye and Hastings, but is ideally situated to access 360 degrees of fun, attractions, monuments and historic places.


Hastings Town is famous for the Battle of 1066 of course, but includes much to see & do in the modern age. Hastings Old Town is nestled in between the East & West Hill, where their are two of the countries remaining funicular railways at the foot of each, to deliver you gently to the peak of the cliffs. On the East hill you have the Hastings country Park, 600 acres of land in which to ramble, nature watch & discover. Perched at the top of the West Hill is Hastings Castle ruins, along with the Smugglers caves, a must see for all historians & those that want to view the town from a different perspective. Along with the quaint Tudor houses & unique shops, the old town has something for everyone & all at a leisurely pace. Hastings pier is in the process of a rebuild at the moment, but promises to be a unique visit. when it opens. The net huts & boats are a key feature of the Old town & are home to one of the few beach launched fleets left in Britain. Come & discover a slice of history for yourself!

Finding things to do with the Kids In Hastings is never going to be a problem, no matter what your budget. Amusements, miniature railway, crazy golf, boating lake, beautiful sandy & pebble beaches to buIld sandcastles, caves & rock pools to discover, a Sealife aquarium, trampolines and the shipwreck & fishermans museums, to name but a few.

If you fancy something a little more sporty we have the Summerfields leisure centre with swimming pool & most other sports activities, provides a convenient one-stop shop for the more active among you.

Clambers play centre offers an ideal play for the smaller tots, who would like to play in a more sheltered environment & is a rainy day destination.

When we said 360* of fun, activities & leisure, we really did mean it! As the map shows, we are right by the sea & a stones throw from all the beach & marine activity you can manage. From Power Boating, Rib boating, land boarding, paddle boarding, kayaking, wind surfing, kite surfing, sand buggy, water ski or jet ski, we have it all.

If you prefer something a little more land based, then target sports might be your thing with Archery, Axe throwing, crossbow or air riffle practice. A short drive to Hailsham gives you Quad biking, but if your desire is something a little more challenging or competitive, then maybe wall climbing & paint balling is right up your street. We have free outdoor courts in Alexander Park & the Stade, as well as bookable sports activities at the local indoor sports centre for those that prefer shelter when they play.

Hastings has long been the home of the artist & as you strole through the streets, don't be surprized if you bump into one or two of them. From actors & comedians such as Tom Baker, Eddie Izzard & Paul Merton, artists & sculptors such as Julliette Dodd, Caroline Macey & Lee dyer and singers such as 'Suggs' from Madness, they've all made Hastings their home. In fact we also seen to have our fair share of multi-generational artists as well. Tracy Emin went to college here & Jo Brand grew up here. The Bohemian atmosphere of Hastings remains a Mecca for all artists, no matter what their craft & the South Coast is fast becoming the 'go to' place for exhibitions at the De La Warr Pavilion, Jerwood Gallery & many smaller, more personal, galleries scattered around the town. It also boasts some iconic Art Deco, Modernist architectural buildings in which to exhibit. Along with 2 theatres & many museums we have a much more to wet your cultural appetite. Hastings & the surounding area has an established & enviable reputation for some of the finest food produce in Sussex. It not only boasts the best meat produced from locally bred herds of beef and Romney Marsh Lamb, but also some of the freshest locally caught fish from one of the largest beach launched fishing fleets in Britain. The quality & local abundance of this fair, means you cannot get tastier produce. Many of the local restaurants take full advantage of this & you will find that both locals & vistors frequent their establishments.

Hastings has a number of food festivals to celebrate the bounty of the sea & harvest of the land. These include 'Eat Global,' in March,' Midsummer Fish Festival,' in June, 'Hastings Seafood & wine Festival,' in September & the 'Herring Festival,' In November.
